Down-Regulation Of HLA Class I Antigen Is An Independent Prognostic Factor For Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma

August 04, 2017

UroToday- Human leukocyte antigen class I (HLA I) molecules play a critical role in the recognition and lysis of tumor cells by cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Previous reports have suggested that HLA I are down regulated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (cRCC) in 15-30% of cases, but decreased HLA I expression has never been correlated with outcome. Here, Kitamura and colleagues examine HLA I expression in a cohort of 45 patients with cRCC and correlate expression with prognosis.

Median patient age was 61 years and median follow-up was 63 months. The authors found that HLA I expression was down regulated in 37.8% of cRCC, and that the loss of HLA I expression did not correlate with tumor size, grade or TNM stage. In univariate, down regulation of HLA I expression, detected immunohistochemically in this study, was found to be a predictor of disease specific survival (p
